Alfa Romeo is hoping to enter the premium SUV market towards the latter part of next year. At the moment Alfa is going through a complete overhaul of its whole range, which has started since the launch of the MiTo.
This new SUV is said to be a direct rival to the BMW X3 and the Audi Q5. The car is said to be built at the firm’s Mirafiori’s plant in Turin. This new car will be based on an extended platform of the Giulietta, whilst also supporting four-wheel drive. The SUV will make use of MacPherson strut suspension up front and a multi-link set up on the back. Engines should be the similar to the ones found in the Giulietta, as well as a new range-topping 3,3l V6 engine, producing in the region of 300bhp.
Alfa Romeo has had no previous experience with SUVs besides the Matta (also known as the 1900M) which was built between 1952 and 1954. In 2003 they also revealed an SUV concept called the Kamal at the Geneva Motor Show.
I have my doubts about this car. Alfa Romeo is known for their sports cars and their fast saloons. Making an SUV is aesthetically difficult, especially with Alfa’s current design language.
